Bolognese Grappling (applying Marozzo’s presa’s to Sword and Spadone) is our newest video. Using Marozzo’s grappling techniques in his dagger section, Coach Paul applies the concepts to the use of the sword and the two handed sword. For those of you who attended the seminar of the same subject, this is a follow up on the material you studied.
A complete English translation of Anonimo Bolognese (MSS Ravenna M-345/M-346) is now available. Thanks to the hard work of Stephen Fratus, you can download the pdf here. Believed to be an early manuscript of the Bolognese tradition it contains more single sword plays than any of the other Bolognese works. Their are some very unique techniques in this manuscript, and I recommend it to anyone pursuing the Bolognese tradition.
The Institute has not slowed down as we approach the end of the year. In October we held a fight day, and the Bolognese Grappling seminar.
The Bolognese seminar was a comparison of grappling techniques with dagger, single sword and Spadone.
December saw the last fight day of the year. There were some new people attending for the first time and some participants we hadn’t seen in quite a while.
Although there are still classes going on, we hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and we will see you all next year!
On July 15th, Coach Paul taught a six hour seminar devoted to the Messer. The first half of the class focused on fundamentals. Students then sparred with the weapon. The second half consisted of focusing on disarms, wrestling, and some techniques used just to show off! We ended the day with more sparring. Despite the heat, everyone persevered. Attendees have asked for additional seminars with this weapon, so stay posted for the next one.
Coach Paul just released a video of one of his favorite new drills.
Captain America Challenge
Fight Day on June 23, saw Coach Paul return to his birthday challenge. For the challenge, Coach Paul fought a 2 minute round for each year of his life. In addition, his challengers got to pick the terms of the fight, weapons, no weapons, and even when in the day they would face him. As always some challengers came up with some very interesting contests including a Captain America bout and a Kiai fight. In 3 hours, Coach Paul successfully fought all 48 fights. Thanks again to all who participated and those who came to watch the fun.
